Circular Economy Award

An award to recognise a particular noteworthy contribution to the Circular Economy from a person or company active within the tyre industry.

Nominees

AZuR Network

Germany’s AZuR Network continued to grow this year bringing in more new members from Germany and neighbouring countries. Key milestones achieved this year include the presentation of a resolution to the German government during the “Week of the Environment” in June and the organising of the first Retreaders Summit in Günzburg in October.

Circular Rubber Platform

Circular Rubber Platform is a knowledge and networking hub for rubber circularity set up to research raw materials and technologies on the market that could lower rubber’s impact on the environment. In January 2024, they an online community was created, with a database of materials, technologies, services and software that contribute to a circular rubber economy. Community members can attend webinars while the platform itself raises awareness on rubber circularity. The platform already has 199 individual members, 70 companies and 2 universities connected to the platform, from 19 different countries globally.

Liberty Tire Recycling and Wal Mart

For over 20 years, Walmart and Liberty Tire Recycling have partnered to responsibly manage end of life tyres showcasing a commitment to sustainability and circularity. This collaboration has evolved from simple tyre collection to manufacturing products from recycled tyres for Awl Mart stores including lawn and garden items like rubber mulch and patio tiles. The partnership continues to innovate, exploring new ways to incorporate recycled rubber into various store products, aiming to replace virgin materials with more sustainable alternatives. A recent project at a Wal Mart store in Missouri demonstrates this commitment by repaving a portion of the parking lot with rubberised asphalt, utilising over 1,200 end-of-life tyres, 420 gallons of used motor oil, and 170 tons of reclaimed asphalt.

Tyromer

This year, Tyromer completed the circular project of turning mining tyres into high-quality conveyor belts with partners Teck Resources (mining) and Fenner from Teck’s Canadian mining operations in Western Canada and once that material was devulcanized, Fenner Dunlop developed mul rubber compound. This belt has been on-site for over a year in operation already and is expected to last another 3-4 years.

Vaculug

UK Retreader Vaculug has continued to be very proactive in 2024 with a variety of sustainability-related activities designed to increase the company’s profile. The Vaculug Sustainability Forum, launched two years ago to promote sustainability in the tyre industry, is growing in terms of attendance and recently hosted the fourth such event. Meanwhile, the company also hosted the BTMA Retread Forum Day. Other activities this year included an investment in Pure Electric – an e-scooter venture. Vaculug is the first tyre retreader to commit to net zero by 2030.

AZUR Network

The AZUR Network, which comes under the umbrella of the WdK (German Rubber Industry Association) is an innovation forum for scrap tyre recycling. Of key importance is a project to research ways to promote the eco-potential of retreaded tyres. AZUR Network have been awarded the 2023 Circular Economy Award for their contribution to the promotion of the tyre retreading sector
